Mastering with the Neve 32087 Mastering EQ
The Neve 32087 Mastering EQ is a rare equalizer specifically designed for mastering music. The tone of the EQ is undeniably Neve. Phil Demetro a mastering engineer at Toronto’s Lacquer Channel makes an interesting point about the 32087 “If you like the sound of vinyl records then you have most likely heard this unit because a lot of the world's vinyl transfer consoles were made by Neve and included this unit.” The 32087 has an intense and aggressive musicality. Whenever you run music through it, it’s tone creates a sweet, ‘sheeny’ sound to the highs and a deep, warm low end.
A mastering EQ in an engineer’s chain is as important as all the other pieces. But it is unique to all studios. Some of my other favourites are the Chandler TG12345 Curve Bender, Crane Song IBIS, GML 8200 and the Avalon AD2077 Dual Mono. Depending on your chain, all of the EQ’s listed would be a great choice. Colin Jordan of Boiler Room Mastering loves his AD2077 and says “It’s a great tool for ‘sweeting’ up a mix. It’s great for opening up ‘air’ in a mix which is a typical thing mastering engineers do.” A mastering engineer’s job with an EQ is to help un-muddy a mix. To bring some parts out and to push some loud ones back.
